چکیده

Phase functions have been calculated using the Monte Carlo/geometric ray tracing method for single hexagonal pyramidal ice crystals (such as solid and hollow bullets) randomly oriented in space and horizontal plane, in order to study the concentric halo formations. Results from three dimensional model calculations show that 9° halo can be as bright as the common 22° halo for pyramidal angle of 28°, and the 18°, 20°, 24° and 35° halos cannot be seen due to the strong 22° halo domination in the scattering phase function between 18° and 35°. For solid pyramidal ice crystals randomly oriented horizontally, the 35° arc can be produced and its intensity depends on the incident ray solar angle and the particle aspect ratio.

Ice analog halos.

Crystals of sodium fluorosilicate are used to produce easy to set up visual displays of atmospheric halos, including the 22 degrees halo, the Parry arc, and upper tangent arcs. Scattering phase functions for single ice-analog rosettes, including a rough one, and a column aggregate, measured in randomized orientation, are also given. The phase functions show prominent halo features, with the exc...

On the limitation of using asymmetry factor for radiative transfer involving cirrus clouds

We investigate the limitation of using the asymmetry factor through the Henyey-Greenstein function in representing the scattering phase function for radiative transfer in ice clouds containing hexagonal ice crystals. Relative accuracy checks for solar fluxes are carried out using three cirrus cloud size distributions. The flux results computed from the Henyey-Greenstein phase function, based on...

A general setting for halo theory.

We describe a general framework for systematically treating halos that are due to refraction in preferentially oriented ice wedges, and we construct an atlas of such halos. Initially we are constrained neither by the interfacial angles nor the orientations of real ice crystals. Instead we consider "all possible" refraction halos. We therefore make no assumption regarding the wedge angle, and on...

Observing cirrus halos to constrain in-situ measurements of ice crystal size

In this study, characteristic optical sizes of ice crystals in synoptic cirrus are determined using airborne measurements of ice crystal size distributions, optical extinction and water content. The measurements are compared with coincident visual observations of ice cloud optical phenomena, in particular the 22◦ and 46◦ halos. In general, the 5 scattering profiles derived from the in-situ clou...

Introduction:  In  this  study,  we  utilized  the  MCNP4C  Monte  Carlo  code  to  quantitatively  evaluate  the  influence of crystal size and material on intercrystal scatter and parallax effects.   Materials and Methods:  For each of the 5 selected crystals (BGO, LSO, LYSO, LuAP, GSO), transport of  511  keV  photons  originating  from  a  point  source  and  incident  on  the  central  cry...
